On-demand transit typically has four main use cases that include first/last mile, underperforming bus routes, low-density area mobility, and paratransit, with each use case capable of solving complex agency challenges. As the industry leader, RideCo’s on-demand transit software both solves those challenges and delivers data-driven results that exceed service goals. In this blog, we will analyze the first/last mile use case and how RideCo can provide the right solution.
In this use case, riders are provided high-frequency connections that close the gap between fixed-route transit and trip origins and destinations. It is typically defined as restricted service to or from a particular point of interest.
This is beneficial for residents who do not live close to transit hubs and require connection into the existing fixed routes. The service, thus, drives riders the first mile and the last mile of their total trip.
Within a defined service zone, riders are picked up at a flex stop a short walk from their homes and are dropped off at a single point of interest, usually a transit hub. From there, riders can take a fixed route to their final destinations.
Since there are often only one or two possible destinations that connect riders to the existing transit network, this use case maximizes route efficiency because every requested ride is going to the same place at the same time. With more people sharing rides, passengers per vehicle hour (PVH) is increased, resulting in higher vehicle productivity and ultimately, reducing agency costs.
Using our Time Snapping feature, drop offs at the transit hub are configured to arrive a few minutes before the fixed-route bus or train leaves the station. This ensures shorter wait times and guaranteed arrival times which contribute to RideCo’s average 95%+ on-time performance record.
Considering the benefits of the first/last mile use case, many agencies across North America have implemented RideCo’s on-demand solution to solve their top challenges — notably by Calgary Transit, Guelph Transit, and VIA Metropolitan Transit.
Our service with Calgary Transit in the Carrington and Livingston zone connects these two growing communities with other parts of the city. Carrington and Livingston previously had no efficient means of accessing express transit and no local bus routes to service this low-density area. With RideCo’s end-to-end solution providing software and operations support, the communities’ residents have seen many significant improvements, including:
The first/last mile use case can address many of your agency’s transit challenges, while bringing an accessible and affordable public transit service to underserved communities.
